rriving at GI Coffee, you will experience a sense of shuttling in time and space. The location is on Lane 1088 of hip Yuyuan Road neighborhood, so it was well-reasoned for us to combine modernity and tradition for the concept. The entire project design was based on the functionality necessary for intended activities to be carried out conveniently within the space.

Light tones were used as a base to give a fresh breath to the space and serve as a blank canvas to work on

the green tone which is the signature of this space. Using natural materials like stone and wood along with inherent modern defects like exposed pipes bestow a new life and vitality to the space through design.

We sought to balance the traditional elements with minimalist references which were translated into the design language that constituted the concept of the project. The clean aesthetic without many visual distractions results in a calm, contemplative space with an intrinsic magic.

The French-style entrance is designed with lines, as if an optical illusion portal which could reach another world. The facade is like a book, waiting for exploration. Different scenes inside can be seen by the windows, like capturing different moments.

The metal frames with a low saturation gentle green is reminiscent of Art Nouveau glasshouses. Vert Réséda is the name of this color, inspired by the Grand Palais in Paris. The French Windows and minimal single door add a cozy and casual atmosphere, allowing the audience to relax and immerse in the artistic atmosphere.

Different things - books, digital artwork, plants, coffee - come together in this building, likewise expecting all kinds of different interesting souls to merrily gather together in this space.

We are trying to build a context between the space and people, to create a unique aesthetic experience. Through the space, the infinite energy of Gwantsi can energize our life. Like plants nourished by soil, this space nourishes the growth of ideas and imagination.

While customers wait and watch the barista prepare a cup of coffee for them, they will have a feeling of “visiting an old friend”, they can have a relaxing chat with the barista next to the counter. The purpose is shorten the sense of distance between people naturally.

The design of folding windows and mini-bar dissolve the internal and external boundaries of the space; people can sit in the coffee shop and enjoy the outdoors, so that the two separate areas interact and connect. The terrace continues the design of the first floor, it’s like an inviting sign, inviting passers-by to step into the space and explore.

Our new studio space is our pride. We renovated an old community building, transforming it into a multifunction space with cutting edge production technologies.

In partnership with Sony and Epic Games, we created a full service immersive production space featuringa Sony Crystal LED virtual production volume,

a motion capture studio, and a volumetric capture and photogrammetry studio. With latest Sony camera technology, multiple tracking and lighting solutions, and partnership with Epic Games, our studio is an unmatched virtual production volume and an immersive content research and development center for GI, Sony and Epic Games.

In addition to being a state of the art immersive and virtual production studio, our venue is capable of hosting mixed reality livestream events, offline mixed reality events, performances & exhibitions, art events, & fashion shows.

Together with our dazzling Sony Crystal LED screen and multiple closely connected spaces, we can offer anexceptional immersive experience in a central Shanghai location.

Just like our studio, our office building is designed as a multifunction space. First floor, with its direct access to the adjacent studio space, can be converted to a co-working space, an event space, an art gallery or a production support area.

Second floor has viewing windows overlooking the studio, allowing immersive production crews to observe and manage the studio and provide 3D artists a direct connection to their work. This floor can also be used during events, meetings or as a VIP hosting space.

On Third and Fourth floors light tones and abundant natural light create a tranquil working atmosphere. This is where the magic happens, our colleagues creating the next generation immersive content.

In line with our reputation for innovation, we also do research and development on virtual production technologies, immersive content and digital human applications. It’s not all work and no play, our colleagues and clients can relax and socialize at our Fourth floor balcony after a hard day’s work.

Sony Virtual Production Solutions
  • As cinematographers and studios demand a flexible, realistic and timely way to transport viewers to imagined or remote destinations, especially with the restrictions presented by the pandemic, virtual production is quickly becoming the hottest alternative to on-location shooting. Instead of using blue- or greenscreen technology, which adds characters or locations in post, storytellers are turning to virtual production as a cost-effective and accommodating solution for creating virtual environments that can be interacted with on-set, captured in-camera and finished in realtime.
  • As the industry embraces this new workflow, Sony is prepared to enable creators with intuitive, high-quality tools to enhance their storytelling and minimize the costs associated with traveling to different locations — all while providing new and engaging levels of reality.

Epic Games and SONY
Create the Future Together
  • The company’s high-performance Crystal LED display
and original Venice digital cinema camera can be used
to facilitate a dynamic virtual production environment
that leverages the same wide color gamut. In fact,
the B-series Crystal LED display is purpose-built for virtual production environments, developed in close collaboration with Sony Pictures Entertainment and the filmmaking community. Sony also works alongside thought leaders,
like Epic Games, on virtual production solutions, supporting Epic’s Unreal Engine and In-Camera Visual Effects (ICVFX) toolset to help bring the virtual world into the real world.
  • Sony worked with Epic Games to test the performance
of our original Venice camera in comparison to competitor cameras and walls, including our new Crystal LED wall.
The tests compared a variety of aspects and challenges
that productions face, including skin tones, color calibration, moire and more. The test findings and analysis will help to improve the virtual production user experience and workflow.

SONY Crystal LED Virtual
Production System Solution
  • The Crystal LED Virtual Production System Solution
is a new content creation solution that enhances
the freedom of expression for creators. This is enabled
by the in-camera VFX method, which combines
the Sony's large LED display Crystal LED B-series
and their digital cinema camera VENICE, alongside
a camera tracking system and real-time engine.
  • A virtual background such as 3DCG (three-dimensional computer graphics) is displayed on the Crystal LED
B-series display, which has features supported such
as high resolution, high brightness, and wide color
gamut. This enables video production that combines
CG and live-action in real time without post-processing
such as composition. The combination of the Crystal
LED and VENICE delivers high-quality color reproduction
and gradation expression, resulting in reduced editing work and high-quality content. Furthermore, the point cloud software Atom View – Sony Innovation Studios award winning and patented technology – scans existing places and objects and converts them into 3DCG models.
This makes it possible to create photorealistic virtual backgrounds, as if the subjects were really there.
